We are working on developing a leadership team for

Why are schools going to a one to one?
Though this list is not all encompassing of the reasons why we are moving to a one to one, it provides a background for the move:
Improve student achievement and increase student learning
Improve student engagement and develop student-centered classrooms
Complements project-based learning driven by research, collaboration and production of a final product
Broaden learning beyond the classroom
Takes advantage of teachable moments
Preparation for tomorrow’s workplace
Allows teachers to more easily differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students.
Opens up more opportunities for teachers and students to collaborate with other educators, students, and professionals throughout the world.
Instructional tool to help teach the Iowa Core Curriculum
Give students a tool to help them become self-directed learners
Levels the playing field for all students
Make technology integration more efficient; more time spent on instruction
Teach digital citizenship and technology usage to students
Schools need to change and this is one tool that will help
What it takes to make it work?

Teachers, students, parents and the community need to know what, when, where, and why
How much does it cost?
Cardinal purchased 425 machines(teacher/student) for approximately $681,000 or about $1602/laptop.
Van Meter purchased 340 machines(teacher/student) for approximately $592,000 or about $1740/laptop
Sigourney purchased 285 machines(teacher/student) for approximately $436,000 or about $1592/laptop
Approximately cost per student/year is around $400.
Less than 7% of student generated revenue to put a laptop in the hands of every student(seems like a good use of funds:))
Included in that cost is:
software-This is where most of the difference in cost is (Van Meter had Microsoft for Macs put on every machine)
hardware-network upgrades, servers, etc.
Training for the IT department-Sigourney and Cardinal share Technology Directors helping lower Sigourney's cost
PD for teachers
Apple Care- Call for 24 hour support as needed
Managing system-access points, Casper, etc.
How is it paid for?
Most schools have gone to a 3 or 4 year lease

Insurance-School Policy through EMC covers machines. Van Meter's plan first time a computer is:
1st time a computer is damaged students pay up to $100- If turned over to insurance school is responsible for the $250 deductible
2nd time a computer is damaged students pay up to $200-If turned over to insurance school is responsible for the $250 deductible
3rd time a computer is damaged students pay up to full cost of repair-If turned over to insurance school is responsible for the $250 deductible

$35 Technology/Software Assessment paid by families- Allows for money to help pay for insurance deductibles, repairs, etc

The Rollout is very important and takes a lot of preparation to run smoothly
Communicate plans for rollout
Hand out machines-Make sure all students can log on
Orientation- Lead teachers to facilitate
Hand out rest of equipment (bag, charger, and extension cord)
Train Teachers - on-going
Plan for damaged machines
1st step- Librarian, fill out report, may fix, if not send to Tech Director
2nd step- Tech Director determines if it can be fixed on site, if not send for repair
3rd step- Send for repair- Usually 3 day turnaround.

Compelling reasons from a non Mac guy - I have supported PCs in schools for more than 8 years. This is what I have found to be true so far in my experiences with Apple and the MacBook initiative:
Apple not only builds the widget, they write the software that runs on it. They sell it, deliver it, set it up and support it. UPS didn't just drop off a bunch of machines for me to sort out...
Apple helps provide for the gap that has been missing between technology and education. For schools that are technology rich it helps simplify the management, and software issues caused by having a bunch of different types of machines running around the district. For schools that are technology poor it offers a way to level the playing field. In all cases they provide unrestricted access to all staff and students to the same quality and quantity of technology 24/7.

Opportunity to connect curriculum with the way students live today (ipods, email, etc etc)
Nearly instant communication with students, parents and other staff via email,
Ability to take "work" home easily with the Mac - for students and staff -

More relevant assessment tools - i.e. the arts & foreign language using Photobooth
Students feel empowered - so do teachers!
